Our students will be encouraged to meal plan and shop together on Mondays for the ingredients to make their own lunches and eat together each day. We hope to foster discussion about healthy choices and share in a mindful mealtime together.
Our younger/middle school aged students will be encouraged to identify and connect with a local non-profit that inspires them and make a commitment to volunteer weekly with that group. Our older/high school aged students will be encouraged to identify and connect with someone or an organization or business that engages in a pursuit that they would like to pursue. We will vet these options for appropriateness and assist them in securing an apprenticeship opportunity for the school year.
Every day from 3-5pm, our students will host a few students from neighboring schools or homeschools, to share in activity that interests them. This weekly schedule will be designed by our students and shared on our website and Facebook. Students will be able to register by the day, week or month for these after school hours.
Twice a day, the teachers will facilitate an opportunity for an optional community movement activity, driven by the students' interests.
One Wednesday per month, our whole community will share a dinner together. Each family will choose a month to organize the meal and will cook together in the kitchen at Walnut.
As a community and a parent co-operative, we hope to build genuine relationships between the students, all the families, the teachers and the board. We encourage family members to spend time at Walnut and volunteer to share their expertise, ideas and energy. We hope to build a community that is characterized by open communication, genuine compassion and joyful collaboration.
